Refining is a key component of the petroleum industry. Refiners take crude petroleum pumped from deep in the earth and turn it into marketable products. Crude petroleum is a mixture of hundreds of different hydrocarbons (chemical compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon) that may be separated and converted into useful products through various refining processes. Generally, refineries use energy to create the high temperatures and pressures needed to break the hydrocarbons into lighter consumer products such as gasoline, aviation fuel, lubricating oil, and home heating oil, as well as feedstocks for the petrochemicals and plastics industries.
